In the Heat of the Bite by Lydia Dare (Book Review)

Title: In the Heat of the Bite
Author: Lydia Dare
Publisher: Sourcebooks

About the book: Chivalry is far from undead. . .

Matthew Halkett, Earl of Blodswell, is one of the few men in the ton who can claim to be a knight in shining armor -- because that's precisely what he was before being turned into a vampyre.  When he spies a damsel in distress in the midst of a storm in Hyde Park, his natural instinct is to rush to her aid. . .

But not every woman needs to be rescued. . .

Weather-controlling witch Rhiannon Sinclair isn't caught in a storm -- she's the cause of it.  She's mortified to have been caught making trouble by the imposing earl, but she doesn't need any man -- never has, and is sure she never will. . .

But when Rhiannon encounters Matthew again, her powers go awry and his supernatural abilities run amok.  Between the two of them, the ton is thrown into an uproar.  There's never been a more tempestuous scandal. . .

My thoughts:  This was book 2 of The Gentlemen Vampyre series and I enjoyed it as much as the first one, It Happened One Bite.  Rhiannon has come to ton because her Aunt Greer has brought her sister Ginny to ton to introduce her to society and hopefully arrange a marriage for her.  Rhiannon is slightly jealous as her aunt has never had anything good to say about her (not that she has much good to say about anyone)- as she is a witch and all.  Rhiannon is suspicious of her Aunt's intentions, so she doesn't intend to let Ginny make any mistakes, but in the process becomes  entangled in a few of her own.

Rhiannon is the witch who can control the weather, but it often gets out of hand when her emotions are in a turmoil.  If she is upset, there is bound to be stormy weather, and if she is angry - watch out for those lightning bolts!  She is very feisty, but she grew up sort of neglected by her father, so she has very little self esteem.  When she meets Matthew, she doesn't suspect he has any feeling for her, but embroils him in a scheme that will allow her to stay in ton for the season, and maybe gain a little respectability.

This was a very fun read and I am looking forward to the next book in the series, Never Been Bit, which I will be reviewing in September. Since the witches all have different powers, they have different personalities and different quirks to their characters. Since their husbands are currently Lycans and Vampyres - who don't get along - it is humorous to read about their interactions.

I would recommend this series for anyone who likes light paranormal romances.  Great for reading at the beach!

It Happened One Bite by Lydia Dare (Book Review)

Title: It Happened One Bite
Author: Lydia Dare
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca

He's lost, trapped, doomed for all eternity. . .

Rich titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland, Lord Kettering, fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence -- trapped for decades in an abandoned castle.  Then, beautiful Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives and things begin to heat up considerably. . .

Unless he can persuade her to set him free. . .

Feisty Blaire Lindsay laughs off the local gossip surrounding her mother's ancestral home -- stories of haunting cannot scare off this battle-born witch.  But when she discovers the handsome prisoner in the bowels of the castle.  Blaire has no idea that she has unleashed anything more than a man who sets her heart on fire. . .

My thoughts: This is the first book in Lydia Dare's new Gentleman Vampire series, with two more books due out later this year.  What I found interesting about this series though, is that you meet some of the coven of witches in it from her Westfield Wolves series (A Certain Wolfish Charm, Tall Dark and Wolfish, The Wolf Next Door, and The Taming of the Wolf.)Two of which I have previously reviewed and enjoyed.

Where I have previously raved over Lydia Dare's lycans, I have now come to the conclusion that it doesn't have to be lycans to make me love her books - it is just her books!  This was a quick read with quite the romantic conclusion.

Blaire is very headstrong and doesn't listen to any man in her life.  She had grown up with an abusive drunken father so pretty much raised herself and her brothers.  So even though one of her brothers is older than her, she is the one who pretty much rules the roost. When she discovers the man locked in the cellar of the castle that her brother has just inherited, she not only lets him out, but invites him to stay!  Because she is a "battle-born" witch, she thinks that she is able to handle any situation - but she has never been up against vampyres before. It is a good thing that Lord Kettering is taken with her and vows to protect her - as he has a couple of vampyres that have been looking for him for the last 20 years.

Lord Kettering and his good friend and creator Matthew Blodswell aren't your run-of-the-mill vampyres.  They are truly the gentleman vampyres that the series suggest.  They do not kill for food and they never change a person into a vampyre unless the person wants to be changed. (They reminded me of the vampires from The Twilight series - difference is that this all takes place in the early 1800's.)

Being a paranormal romance, you have to ask about the sex scenes.  Yes, there are sex scenes in the book, but I found them to be romantic - the kind you read while sort of holding your breath just waiting for what will happen next.

I am definitely a Lydia Dare fan and can't wait for the next book in the series.  In the Heat of the Bite is due out in July with Never Been Bit following in September of this year.

The Taming of the Wolf by Lydia Dare (Book Review)

Title: The Taming of the Wolf
Author: Lydia Dare
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca

My synopsis: Dashiel Thorpe is a Lycan who grew up with a stepfather believing he was a monster.  He had no idea that there were others like him so kept himself chained whenever the moon was full.  When he finds out there are other Lycans, he goes to them to try to get help with learning how to control his urges.  On the first full moon that he has been unchained, he bites Caitrin MacLeod, unknowingly claiming her as his mate.  She flees in the middle of the night, outraged that she let him bite her, not knowing that he is Lycan.

For him, there will never be another woman as long as either he or she lives.  For her, she can go on and love another, never being the wiser. But to Caitrin, Dash is a refuge in a storm. You see - she is a witch and has the fortunate (or unfortunate) ability to see people's futures.  The exception to this is Dash.  When she is with him, her mind clears of all "futures" and she just feels calm and safe.

This all happened at the home of Elspeth Westfield, one of Caitrin's coven sisters, who herself is married to a Lycan.  As Caitrin flees for her home in Scotland, Dash discovers the full meaning of what he has done.  So he follows her - determined to win her over as he can think of no other.  She continues to push him away, even as she feels herself drawn to him inexplicably.

Throw in some of Caitrin's coven sisters (witches) to spice things up as well as Dash's estranged stepfather for some added conflict and you have a enticing read.  Great for a cold winter's night!

My thoughts: I don't know what it is, but I love the books about Lycans/werewolves, and this one was no different.  I love the spunk of Caitrin and how she stands up to Dash, but continues to find herself in compromising situations with him.  My favorite part though, would have to be when Caitrin refuses to back down from Dash's father and sort of bullies him into listening to her.

A Certain Wolfish Charm by Lydia Dare (Book Review)

Title: A Certain Wolfish Charm
Author: Lydia Dare
Publisher: Sourcebooks

About the book: He gets crankier and crankier as the moon gets full. . .

The rules of Society can be beastly -- especially when you're a werewolf and it's that irritating time of the month.  Simon Westfield, the Duke of Blackmoor, is rich, powerful, and sinfully handsome, and has spent his entire life creating scandal and mayhem.  It doesn't help his wolfish temper at all that Miss Lily Rutledge seems not the least bit afraid of him, and in fact, may be as untamable as he is. . .

A woman whose charm is stronger than the moon. . .

When Lily's beloved nephew's behavior becomes inexplicably wild, she turns to Simon, the boy's cousin and guardian, for help. But Simon's idea of assistance is far different than hers, and Lily finds herself ensconced in his house and engaged to the rogue.

My thoughts:  I am loving myself some werewolves!  To heck with all the vampires (Sorry Edward), but I am getting a kick out of these werewolf stories.  Simon is lovable even when he is trying to be all mean - we get to read his thoughts from the beginning, so we know that he is attracted to Lily, but is just trying to keep her on the darkside of the moon (haha) and keep her safe.  That is why he doesn't feel he should marry her - even though she is all he can think about!  Lily thinks he is just toying with her (you know - like a dog with a bone? - Ok, I'll stop with the puns) and feels that he has been coerced into marrying her so that her reputation will not be sullied.  If she could only see what he was thinking!  I love this couple - throw in some werewolf brothers, a werewolf nephew and some well-meaning neighbors and you have the beginning of what I feel will be a great series.

Interview (and Giveaway!) with the Charming Ladies who comprise Lydia Dare

I would like to welcome "Lydia Dare" to Books and Needlepoint today.  Her latest book, A Certain Wolfish Charm, came out April 6.

Thank you so much for having us! You heard right. I said “us”. Two of us make up the writing team Lydia Dare. We’ll try to make it clear which of us is speaking.

1. That is a surprise!  Hopefully I can interview you again in the future and talk about the difficulties/advantages of collaboration!  If someone would have told you 10 years ago that you would be a published author - what would you have said?

Lydia/Jodie: I would have thought they were crazy! Ten years ago I had already given up my writing to raise my son. My creativity just disappeared one day. It wasn’t until just a few years ago, that I picked up a pen once more.

Lydia/Tammy: I probably would have said something like “You really think I could?” I actually had a coworker around this time read something of mine and say “You are in the wrong profession!” And that comment has stuck with me from that moment forward. (I probably should tell her she was right at some point.)

2. Jodie - I know what you mean about having your creativity disappear when you have kids - I didn't needlepoint for YEARS after my first child was born!  Do you have a job outside of being an author?

Lydia/Jodie: I work a day job as a meeting planner and travel manager for an IT consulting firm.

Lydia/Tammy: I have been self-employed for about six years. I love working for myself and really consider myself to be incredibly fortunate to be able to earn an income, set my own schedule, and work from home. Jodie and I both have the hardest jobs on earth as well as working full time – we’re both moms. There’s no job more rewarding or more challenging.

3. Tammy - You are very lucky to be self-employed and able to work from home!  I would love to find something where I could work from home!  Where is your favorite place to write - and do you need anything special while writing?

Lydia/Jodie: My favorite place to write is in a local coffee shop. Unfortunately, I don’t get there as often as I’d like, and I end up writing at home more often than not.

Lydia/Tammy: I need quiet. That’s my only requirement. No TV. No radio. No kids. Aside from that, I could write in a wind tunnel, I think. Unless it’s a noisy one.

4. Jodie - I like the coffee shop idea.  I have thought about going there to blog occasionally, but have not done it yet! What would you tell a beginning writer?

Lydia/Jodie: My best advice for a beginning romance writer is to join your local RWA chapter if there is one in your area. I know that I wouldn’t be sitting where I am today without the Raleigh Chapter – Heart of Carolina Romance Writers.

Lydia/Tammy: The best advice I could give is to find other like-minded people who have similar goals, but try to find a group with writers at all stages of their career. Our local RWA chapter is full of brilliant minds we picked throughout the writing process, the selling process, and now we’re on to marketing. I can’t count the number of times I’ve sat down with one of the members and said “Hey, can I ask you a question?” And I don’t think anyone has ever turned me down. While writing is somewhat a solitary pursuit, you’ll get much farther if you find people with similar goals. Some day, it could be you who’s mentoring a new writer.

5. Do you have plans to write any other genre?

Lydia/Jodie: I’m pretty stuck in the Regency era. Tammy likes to joke that I live in the 19th Century and in a lot of ways she’s right. So if I wasn’t writing paranormal Regencies, I’d be writing Regency Historical romance.

Lydia/Tammy: I don’t know if I could not write romance. But if I did, I’d like to try teen fantasy. I like to build worlds and change the rules a bit, stepping outside the norm.

6. Well, I am sure my readers will agree with me, that we love you both writing paranormal romance!  I love the covers of your books! Did you get to have any input on them or the titles?

Lydia/Jodie: Thanks! We’re really happy with the covers too. We have had some input on covers and titles.

Lydia/Tammy: The folks at Sourcebooks have a fabulous team that asks for our input and then builds on it. They turned out great!

7. What were your favorite books growing up?

Lydia/Jodie: I think like most regency lovers – I have to say Pride and Prejudice, but I was also a huge fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.

Lydia/Tammy: When I was really young, I read every book at the school library. There wasn’t one piece of fiction in elementary school that I hadn’t turned the pages on. When I was a little older… Oh, my mother’s romance novels! The ones with the really scrumptious covers, I snuck those away long enough to devour them and then returned them. I think she always knew, though.

8. Do you have any books on your nightstand right now?

Lydia/Jodie: I have research books on my nightstand. The one I thumb through often is Ian Gordon Lindsay’s Georgian Edinburgh.

Lydia/Tammy: My books are my night stand. I have a pile of them beside the bed and they’re stacked up about 10-tall. There’s usually a cup of water that sits precariously on the top.

9. Tammy - I like the idea of using books as a night stand!  Get rid of the furniture and get more books! Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know?

Lydia/Jodie and Tammy: We had the BEST time writing this series, and hope readers have as much fun reading the books as we did writing them.

10. Thank you Lydia and congrats on your new series!

Lydia/Jodie and Tammy: Thank you, again, for having us!
